SHOTGUN!!!!

Introduction:

This guide will focus on the usage of the shotgun weapon type as it applies to the Domination gametype. In it, I'll look at the advantages and disadvantages of the weapons type, as well as the major differences between the two shotguns that matter, the W1014 and the Model 1887. Also, I will describe what I've found to be the most optimal class configurations for success using this weapon type in Domination, including perks.

I. The Shotgun

The shotgun is a short range weapon capable of dealing massive damage from a single shot. It has a small capacity and has a short initial stock of ammo.

Pros: Usually a one shot kill at close range on any part of the body. There are perks and attachments available that control recoil and increase damage/accuracy. These will make the shotgun more effective at slightly longer ranges, but it shouldn't be used at anything but close range, or else any other class of weapon (including the pistol) will tear you up. Shotguns are light weight; you'll move as fast as with an SMG, and the iron sights come up very quickly as well.

Cons:Range is the biggest issue with a shotgun. Being caught in the open while an enemy has you in their sights at long-medium range is a huge risk, even if painkiller is equipped. Also, the shotgun has a relatively small smmo capacity, so those with poor judgement of distance will eat through rounds quickly. Recoil can be significant without a grip attached. Reload times are much longer than for many other guns except for the sniper rifles and light machine guns. However, the reloading process can be interuppted as long as you've gotten one shell in: that shell will be chambered and fired if you run into someone whilst reloading.

II. The Shotguns, Specifically

Model 1887 - The last available shotgun (at Lvl 67), this has the longest range. It is a lever action weapon that is more capable of a single kill shot versus the M1014. It has a slow rate of fire and is slightly less accurate with high recoil. The more accurate player will like this shotgun. Equipped with Sleight of Hand, you can handle most close quarters situations well, although combat with large numbers of enemies at once is ill-advised.

M1014 - The next effective shotgun is the M1014 (Lvl. 54), a semi-automatic weapon with a higher rate of fire, slightly less power, better accuracy, and a very short clip size (4/16 clip and reserve). This is more ideal for the less accurate player, and is also more effective with multiple enemies at once. This is a great gun to put the grip on, as it will make it decently effective at longer range and gives the gun almost no recoil.

III. Perks

Steady Aim - this is preferred by many players, as it increases hip firing accuracy. This is ideal for the run and gunners.

Stopping Power - only bother on this with the M1014. The M1887 is already powerful enough by itself. This does give the M1014 more of a chance for a one shot kill from slightly farther away.

Sleight of Hand - another good run and gun perk, this counters one of the main issues with the shotgun: long reload times. This perk is best with the W1200.

Cold Blooded/Ninja - one keeps you off the radar, the other keeps you silent. These are two of the best perks to use with the shotgun, especialy the W1200. They let you get close to the enemy and use those ninja skills. With these perks, it really doesn't matter which shotgun you have: get close enough, you only need to shoot once.

Grip - Some people feel the Red Dot is best to use, but I would rather use the Grip. It lowers recoil and increases accuracy by a great deal. Also, the Red Dot is best for precision aiming: at close range, how much do you need that?

My usual loadout for Domination is:

M1014

Grip

Sleight of Hand Pro

Stopping Power Pro

Ninja Pro

IV. Shotguns and Domination

The shotgun is great for two primary roles: Ghost and Defense. It can be a good assault class, but only with interior levels like Vacant and Showdown. Try to stick to close quarters sections of the map, and NEVER GO OUT IN THE OPEN if you you have the shotgun equipped. You'll be ill-prepared for any encounters you find there. Buildings and lots of cover are your friends, and if a level is mostly open (like Countdown) then try to pick a control point and stick close to it, as there are few places you can travel on maps like that where you can be effective and safe. If used with a stealth loadout, the shotgun user is a feared Ghost class and can be great at disrupting enemy movement while the rest of the team is capturing and defending control points. Again, keep your back against walls and try and avoid open spaces.
