Search and Destroy Guide

This will be a general guide to playing search and destroy. There will be no map specific strategies. I will try to split it up into tips for attacking and defending, as well as general tips that apply to both. I do not claim to be an expert in any way, just an enthusiast gamer like yourselves. My only goal with this guide is to help players learn basic tactics and techniques that will perhaps improve their gameplay and thereby make the game more fun for them and myself to play.

Search and Destroy

Alright, so what's search and destroy? Search and destroy is a game type that involves two teams, with one team attacking and one team defending a bomb site. Each map will have two bomb sites. The attacking team has the option of choosing one in which to plant the bomb, while the defending team will try and prevent it from happening. Another way of achieving victory is to eliminate all of the opposing team members. There is no re-spawning once you have died, so in order to be effective, a little bit of strategy is required.

General Tips

1. Learn the maps

I can't stress how important this is. You should try to learn where all of the hiding spots are so that you will know where to look for the enemy.

Other reasons to learn the maps are:

1. So that you'll know where the bomb sites are

2. You will know where the enemy spawns

3. You will know where the choke points are

4. You will know which way the enemy will be taking to the respective bomb sites

If you play with the same group of friends frequently, try to get the names of buildings and reference points consistent between all players. Communication does no good if no one knows what, or where, you're talking about.

2. Communicate

Ohh, the great lost art of communication. This applies to most game types, but search and destroy in particular. It is very important to communicate with your team as far as which way the bomb is going, who is going to be defending what bomb site, where the enemy is, and most importantly, the position of the bomb. The attacking team can't bomb the bomb site without their bomb and a briefcase becomes a very good target to focus your defenses on.

3. Use cover

This is very important in all game types, but I believe even more so in search and destroy due to the fact that you have only one life. Try to present as small a target as possible to the enemy at all times. It is very hard to shoot in this game while running because your accuracy suffers immensely. Even walking slowly affects your accuracy. Try to keep from walking out in the open at any time while playing. While it is impossible to always be behind cover, try to move from one covered position to another. It will make you harder to see and increase your chances for survival, while improving your accuracy. If you do have to move across an open area, use smoke to create your own concealment.

4. Use the right tools for the job

By tools, I mean weapons and perks. Think carefully about the weapon load out that you choose for each map. Also you should consider whether you are attacking or defending and choose suitable perks such as claymores, smoke, and perhaps extreme conditioning to get to a position quickly. 5 .Spread out

Keep some distance between you and your teammates. There are many reasons why this is important, such as random grenades, and noob tubes. 6. Check the score and the radar

Check to see how many of the enemy are still alive so you will know what you're up against. Also check the radar to see where your teammates are dieing, and the direction that the enemy is firing from.

Attacking Team

1. Communicate

Decide which bomb site you're going to attack from the beginning, and communicate any changes or problems along the way. If the target seems to heavily defended, communicate that fact to the team and attack the other bomb site. Use communication to flank the enemy. One of your teammates might be able to get around the side of them while you have them distracted.

2. Plant the bomb well

When I say plant the bomb well, what I mean is that you should plant the bomb in a place that it will be defendable. Make sure that the bomb is on a side of the bomb site that you will be able to see after you plant it. If the enemy team defuses the bomb after you plant it, you lose. You must defend the bomb site until it explodes.

3. Use smoke

This is something that is not done very often or very well. Smoke will conceal the movement of your team and make it harder for the enemy to defend. If they don't know which way you're going, they don't know where to mass their troops.

4. Use grenades to force enemies out of cover

While random grenade kills are great, grenades serve a better purpose of forcing enemies from behind cover, so that they become a target. If you know where the enemy is hiding, but can't shoot at them because they are behind cover, use a cooked grenade to force them to move.

5. Silenced weapons

If the defending team doesn't know where you're attacking from they won't know where to focus their defense.

Defending Team

1. Communicate

Communicate with your team in order to prevent everyone from being at the same place at once. Try to evenly split your team in order to defend both bomb sites. If it is obvious that the other team is attacking one bomb site or the other, then communication allows you to adjust your positions accordingly. If someone kills an attacker and they drop the briefcase, they should let the rest of the team know where that briefcase is.

2. Use Claymores

Claymores are great defensive tools. Anywhere that the attacking team is forced to walk by while trying to plant a bomb is a prime spot for a Claymore. If you are sniping while on the defending team try to use Claymores to cover your ass, and listen for their explosion just encase the enemy shoots your claymore instead of getting killed by it.

3. Have Patience

The attacking team has to either plant the bomb successfully or kill your whole team in order to win. Find a good place of cover that you can use to watch a bomb site and either wait for them to come to you or wait until they plant at the other bomb site.
